Preparing for Your Session
Preparing for Your Pet Photography Session
These photos are going to be a part of your story, and my goal is to make sure the experience is as fun and stress-free as possible. Thinking about the session with the end in mind helps us plan perfectly, whether you're dreaming of a beautiful album or a stunning statement piece for your wall. Here is some information to help you and your pet prepare for a wonderful session.
A Guide to a Relaxed & Successful Session
Your session is booked and we're going to have a wonderful time! My goal is to make this experience feel less like a stuffy photoshoot and more like hanging out with a friend who happens to take amazing photos. Your only job is to relax and enjoy this time with your pet. Leave all the work to me—I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to create beautiful, engaging images.
For Your Pet's Comfort & Happiness
A comfortable pet is a happy, photogenic pet. Here are a few extra steps you can take to ensure they are feeling their best.
Grooming for the Camera: While a full grooming appointment should be done at least two days prior to avoid any salon-day jitters, a light brush right before our session is perfect for a fresh look. Don't forget to trim their nails a few days beforehand and gently clean any debris from around their eyes. For curly-haired dogs, it's especially helpful to have your groomer trim the hair around their eyes so they are clearly visible in your portraits.
The "Zen" Arrival: Plan to arrive at our location 5-10 minutes early. This gives your dog a chance to go potty, sniff the new environment, and settle their nerves before we even take out the camera. A calm start makes all the difference.
The Giver of Good Things: Please bring their absolute favorite high-value treats! During the session, I may ask to be the one to give the treats. This helps me build rapport and trust with your dog, making me the "giver of all good things" and helping me get those perfect, attentive expressions.
Your "Day Before" Checklist
A little planning the day before can make your session day feel effortless.
[ ] Lay out your outfits: Having your chosen clothes (and your pet's special collar and leash) ready to go eliminates any morning rush.
[ ] Pack your session bag: Use the checklist below to pack your water, treats, toys, and grooming tools so you can just grab it and go.
[ ] Confirm our details: Double-check the time and location of our session so you feel confident about where you're going.
[ ] Relax! Get a good night's sleep. The most important thing you can bring to the session is a positive and relaxed attitude. Your pet will pick up on your calm energy, and it will help them feel at ease, too.
Your Session Day Checklist: What to Bring
Water and a Bowl: Especially on warmer days, it’s important to keep your pet hydrated.
High-Value Treats: Bring their absolute favorite, ultimate, can’t-resist treats! Soft, small, and non-messy treats are ideal.
A Favorite Toy: If your dog has a favorite toy (especially one that squeaks!), feel free to bring it along.
The Right Gear: Please bring your dog on a simple, flat collar and a standard leash if possible.
Grooming on the Go: A small brush or comb for quick touch-ups and a towel or wipes for any drool or dirty paws can be very handy.
Poop Bags: A must-have for any outing!

What to Wear
The focus of your session is on your pet, but your clothing is important, too! Your outfits should be true to your personal style and, most importantly, be something you feel great in. If you're unsure where to start, I am more than happy to help you put together a mood board. We can find the perfect color palette and style that complements both you and your pet, ensuring a cohesive and beautiful look for your portraits.
Yes, Please!
Layers: Layers add interest to photos. Think about items like scarves, belts, jackets, vests, and layered shirts.
Textures: Different textures, such as jeans or sweaters, photograph beautifully.
Patterns & Color: Patterns can work great when used in moderation. Don't feel you have to stick to neutrals; feel free to add a splash of color.
Please, No.
Please avoid gym clothes, low-cut tops, super short bottoms, and baggy clothing.
Be aware that large amounts of white, black, or very bright colors like hot pink or bright green do not photograph well.
Avoid hats that create strong shadows on your face, such as baseball hats.
Transition glasses can be problematic as they often turn into sunglasses outside.
Do I have to be in the photos?
You don't have to be, but I highly recommend it. I understand that being in front of the camera can feel awkward, but my job is to make you feel comfortable and guide you into poses that feel natural. We can create images that tell the story of your relationship in a fun and natural way. You don't have to purchase any images that you don't absolutely love, so why not give it a try? You might just be surprised to find that the photos with you in them become your favorites.
Common Questions & Worries
What if my dog can't be off-leash?
That's perfectly fine! For your dog's safety, I prefer they stay on leash, and most dogs I photograph do. The leash is removed through the magic of Photoshop from any image you order. Please note that harnesses and gentle leaders can be difficult to remove, so a simple flat collar is ideal if possible.
My dog has so much energy and will never sit still!
Don't worry! I have many ways to capture their attention and create beautiful portraits, even if they're always on the go. When they are free to be themselves, their unique personality shines through.
What if my dog doesn't have a perfect "sit" or "stay"?
It's okay! While it's always a good idea to work on your dog's sit and stay behavior before our session, I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to create engaging images no matter their obedience level.
My dog is nervous around other dogs or people.
No problem at all. We will simply choose a quiet location that doesn't see much foot or dog traffic.
Session Logistics
Where will our session be?
We will determine the perfect location for your session based on your questionnaire and custom video consultation. I have many options and can help you choose one that creates the look you want and where your dog will be most comfortable.
What if it rains or we need to reschedule?
If Mother Nature has other plans, we will definitely reschedule. Likewise, if you or your pet is feeling under the weather, please let me know as soon as you can so we can find a new date.
Can I bring friends or other pets to the session?
To ensure a calm and successful session, please do not bring extra humans or dogs who are not part of the photoshoot. The only exception is if you need an extra set of hands to help manage a large pack of dogs that are all part of the session.
